FAQs | Little Leaps and Bounds Play Therapy

Question 1

What is Play Therapy?

Accepted Answer

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play — the natural language of childhood — to help children express emotions, process difficult experiences, and develop healthy coping strategies. Rather than talking through problems (which can be difficult for young children), children communicate through play in a safe, non-directive space guided by a trained therapist. It is purposeful, child-led, and grounded in research.

Question 2

How many sessions are needed?

Accepted Answer

Every child is different, and the number of sessions varies depending on your child's needs, the nature of their challenges, and how they respond to therapy. Some children benefit from a shorter course of 8–12 sessions, while others may engage in therapy for longer. We review progress regularly and will always discuss recommendations with you along the way — you will never be left wondering how things are going.

Question 3

What age do you work with?

Accepted Answer

We work with children aged 3–12 years. Play therapy is particularly well-suited to this age group as children naturally communicate through play rather than words. For teenagers or adults, we are happy to provide a referral to an appropriate practitioner.

Question 4

Do parents attend sessions?

Accepted Answer

Parents and caregivers do not attend the play therapy session itself — children need a private, confidential space to feel safe and free to express themselves. However, you are a vital part of the process. Before your child begins, we hold an Initial Parent Consultation to hear your concerns and set goals together. Throughout therapy, regular parent consultations keep you informed of your child's progress and provide practical strategies to support them at home. You are always involved, just not in the room.

Question 5

How do I book?

Accepted Answer

Getting started is simple. You can book an Initial Parent Consultation directly through our online booking page, or reach out via our contact form and we will get back to you promptly. The first step is always a parent consultation — a warm, no-pressure conversation where we get to know your child's needs and answer any questions you have before anything begins.
